Why take interest in The Sport?
Because you’re a fantasy sports addict and want something different to the run of the mill NBA or MLB leagues where there is a million games every couple of days. The AFL – ‘Australian Football League’ is the premier league in Australia regarding Australian Rules football. A winter sport where the regular season is played over 23 weeks between late March and the end of August each year. As the Aussie Rules fantasy season finishes up, we are depending on scheduling, around only 2(TWO!) weeks away from another 17weeks of NFL fantasy football. Taking interest in both these leagues leaves us only with a 12 week fantasy football void between February and March.
So currently, your fantasy calendar looks like this……

Where, instead, it could look like this….

What Sites Are Best For AFL Fantasy?
There are various sites used to register a team for fantasy football purposes for Aussie rules. A few of the more prominent ones are:
For Starting a league/team
http://Fantasy.afl.com.au – The official fantasy site for AFL. The site Hosts both salary cap and draft style leagues. However it doesn’t cater for any keeper or dynasty leagues as all leagues rest from year to year.
http://www.Ultimate-footy.theage.com.au – uses the same scoring system as AFL but provides a lot more customisation for commissioners of each league such as adjusting scoring and player positions.
http://www.Moneyball.com.au – a site where you can use your fantasy knowledge and make some real money betting against other likeminded fantasy players. Similar to Draft kings. (Gamble responsibly and only if your of age) http://www.Sportsdeck.com/au/afl/dreamteam – the original fantasy platform for Aussie Rules before the AFL league developed their own. Similar to the afl fantasy site, this platform focuses on salary cap leagues.
For Researching Trends and Players
Not a heap online on this topic at the moment as there is a huge hole in the market in comparison to what the NFL fantasy scene provides. However some handy sites for player comparisons are still around.
http://www.Fanfooty.com.au – an absolute must check for live score updates and mouseover updates on what your players are doing as well as their prior history and gamelogs.
http://www.Finalsiren.com – a huge statistical database based around the sport with all game logs and a great player compare feature.
http://www.Dreamteamtalk.com.au – 3 blokes from the eastern states been giving their takes on fantasy output for a number of years. Great weekly articles focusing on different ways to improve your salary cap based teams.
The jist….How Does it Work
Standard AFL fantasy salary cap games are based on making a team of 22 players to combine to score the most possible points on any given game week. You will also have 8 players available on your bench, so 30 players in total. Like NFL fantasy, points are allocated to each player based on their contributions for their teams on the field for each game.
3pts per Kick
2pts per Handball
3pts per ‘Mark’ (A Reception/catch)
4pts per tackle
1 pt per Ruck tap (we’ll cover this under ruckmen)
1 pt per ‘behind’ kicked (a Field goal that goes between one large post and one smaller post)
6 pts per Goal kicked
1 pt per Free kick awarded to your player
-3pts per free kick your player gives away.
